A new study by the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences suggests that cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical found in marijuana, might help protect skin from sun damage. Researchers are constantly looking for new ways to prevent skin damage, and CBD could be a promising solution.
The study involved 19 participants who applied nano-CBD to their skin for two weeks. Nano-CBD is CBD processed into tiny particles for better skin absorption. After 14 days, the treated skin was exposed to three times the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation needed to cause injury. The skin was then examined for burns a day after the exposure.
Dr. Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, stated that these results are promising. The study also involved the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research in Florida.
Friedman emphasized that CBD, when applied correctly, can significantly impact skin health. The study indicates that more research is needed to explore how CBD can protect against sun damage. While sunscreen remains the best protection against the sun, CBD could offer additional protection for areas of the skin that still get damaged.
Friedman explained that nano-CBD could help repair and protect DNA from UV radiation’s harmful effects. Preventing sun damage is crucial because it accelerates skin aging and can lead to skin cancer. More extensive studies are needed to determine the best ways to use CBD for skin protection and overall skin health.
This study highlights the potential of CBD in preventing skin damage from the sun. While more research is needed, CBD could become an important tool in skincare and sun protection.
