How Weight-Loss Drugs Affect Grocery Shopping

New study reveals significant changes in grocery spending for people using medications like Ozempic and Wegovy

Weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy, initially developed for treating Type 2 diabetes, are now impacting grocery shopping habits. A study by analytics firm Grocery Doppio shows that these medications are leading people to spend less on groceries and choose healthier food options.

Changes in Shopping Habits

People using these medications experience reduced appetites and altered taste preferences. The study found that users of Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy spend less on groceries overall and select healthier items. The biggest reductions were seen in purchases of:

  • Snacks and confectionery products: 52% less
  • Baked goods: 47% less
  • Soda and sugary beverages: 28% less
  • Alcohol: 17% less
  • Processed foods: 13% less

Conversely, there was an increase in purchases of lean proteins and other healthy foods.

Personal Stories

Lauren Cobello, a publicist from Syracuse, has lost 45 pounds in six months while taking Tirzepatide, a generic version of Zepbound. She notes significant changes in her shopping habits. Cobello now consumes more protein and vegetables, drinks little to no alcohol, and avoids snacks. Her budget has decreased by a couple of hundred dollars per month, but she is eating healthier.

Elise Ramer, a communications professional from Sarasota, Florida, has been on Mounjaro for 19 months and lost over 60 pounds. She reports reallocating her grocery spending towards protein shakes, higher-protein foods, and less junk food.

Health Benefits

These medications mimic GLP-1, a hormone that helps people feel full faster and longer after eating. As a result, 97% of people on these drugs decreased their grocery spending by an average of 11%.

The use of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy is leading to healthier eating habits and reduced grocery bills. While the food industry, particularly snack and confectionery makers, sees a decline in sales, individuals are benefiting from better health and more mindful eating practices.
